Water consumption
The key performance indicator for water is the specific freshwater withdrawal in relation to Heinzel Group’s own production volumes of pulp and paper. In 2025, the production-related water intensity was 22.4 m³ per ton of pulp or paper produced. However, the sawmill was excluded from this KPI because it would not realistically reflect the actual water usage for pulp and paper production. Sawn tim ber production requires less water at a high production rate. Including the sawmill, the group-wide water withdrawal was 19.3 m³ per ton in 2025.The specific freshwater withdrawal increased slightly from 22.2 m³/t to 22.4 m³/t in 2025. Despite marketrelated fluctuations, continuous efficiency measures in the Group’s pulp and paper production helped maintain a largely stable consumption level, resulting in only a marginal rise and an overall steady wateruse performance.Total freshwater withdrawals decreased in 2025 mainly due to reduction measures on site in Pöls, a higher production with lower specific water withdrawal at PM6, and lower production and water demand at heinzelpaper and Estonian Cell. The share of water recycled and reused increased from 89.8% in 2024 to 90.7% in 2025, reflecting further optimization of internal water cycles and more efficient use of freshwater resources.
